Chongqing is unlike any other city in China — a sprawling megacity carved into steep river valleys where fog rolls between skyscrapers, ancient stilt houses cling to cliffs, and the aroma of Sichuan peppercorns drifts from every alley.
Over six days, this Route A itinerary takes you deep into the Mountain City's soul: from the lantern-lit tiers of Hongya Cave to the silent grandeur of Wulong's limestone bridges, from the spiritual stone faces of Dazu to the bustling porcelain lanes of Ciqikou.
"In Chongqing, every staircase leads to a story, and every hotpot bubbling over red oil is a welcome."
Your complete 6-day journey through Chongqing's mountain landscapes, ancient heritage, and fiery cuisine.
Welcome to the Mountain City! Upon arrival at Chongqing Jiangbei International Airport or the railway station, your private guide and driver will greet you and transfer you to your hotel. After settling in, head to Hongya Cave — Chongqing's most iconic landmark. This 11-story stilt-house complex clings to the riverside cliff, glowing with amber lanterns after dark. Stroll through its maze of snack stalls, craft shops, and teahouses, then enjoy a panoramic night view of the Jialing River and the illuminated skyline from the riverside promenade.
Step back a thousand years in Ciqikou Ancient Town — a well-preserved Ming and Qing dynasty riverside settlement famous for its porcelain-making heritage. Wander narrow stone lanes lined with traditional teahouses, craft workshops, and street-food vendors selling sticky rice cakes and spicy pickled vegetables. In the afternoon, visit the Three Gorges Museum, one of China's finest regional museums, where immersive exhibits trace the history of the Yangtze River, the ancient Ba-Yu culture, and the monumental Three Gorges Dam project.
Start the morning with a ride on the Yangtze River Cableway — once the locals' daily commute, now a thrilling aerial journey across the mighty Yangtze with sweeping views of the city's layered skyline and converging rivers. Next, witness the internet-famous Liziba Station, where Chongqing's light-rail train appears to thread straight through a residential tower — a perfect snapshot of the city's vertical engineering ingenuity. Spend the afternoon exploring the E'ling Park and Testbed 2 creative district, a former industrial site transformed into a maze of galleries, cafés, and rooftop viewpoints.
Depart early for the Wulong Karst UNESCO World Heritage Site, a 2.5-hour scenic drive into the misty mountains. Explore the Three Natural Bridges — Tianlong, Qinglong, and Heilong — three colossal limestone arches that tower over a hidden valley where the film *Transformers: Age of Extinction* was shot. Walk the wooden plank paths beneath dripping stalactites and through emerald gorges. Continue to Fairy Mountain Grassland (Xiannü Shan), a high-altitude alpine meadow where wild horses graze and sea-of-clouds vistas stretch to the horizon. Return to Chongqing in the evening.
Journey to the Dazu Rock Carvings, a UNESCO World Heritage treasure spanning over 1,200 years of Chinese religious art. At the Baodingshan site, gaze upon massive cliffside tableaus depicting the Buddhist cycle of life, compassionate bodhisattvas, and intricate scenes of daily existence carved during the Southern Song dynasty. Your expert guide will decode the symbolism behind each figure, from the 31-meter reclining Buddha to the detailed "Parental Kindness" narrative. The serene hillside setting, shaded by ancient trees, makes this one of China's most contemplative heritage experiences.
Enjoy a leisurely final morning in Chongqing. Depending on your departure time, you may visit a local market for last-minute Sichuan peppercorn, chili oil, or pickled vegetable souvenirs. Your guide and driver will then escort you to Chongqing Jiangbei International Airport or the railway station for your onward journey. Take with you the warmth of Chongqing's hospitality, the spice of its cuisine, and the memory of a city that rises from the river mist in layers of stone, steel, and story.
