大多数外国游客需要办理中国旅游签证（L字签证）。不过，经昆明机场过境的54个国家旅客可享受144小时过境免签政策。请至少提前一个月通过所在地的中国大使馆或领事馆申请签证。

云南大部分地区海拔适中，昆明、大理、丽江等地一般不会出现明显高原反应。但前往香格里拉、梅里雪山、玉龙雪山等高海拔地区（超过3200米）时，部分游客可能会有轻微头痛、气短等症状。建议初到高原避免剧烈运动、多喝水、注意保暖，必要时可提前服用红景天或携带氧气瓶；如出现严重不适应及时就医或下撤至低海拔地区。

火车站、景区门口常有人推销“低价一日游”，请认准正规旅行社和平台；购买玉石、银器、普洱茶等特产请选择信誉良好的店铺并索要发票；古城内骑马、拍照、编彩辫等体验项目务必先谈好价格；雨季（6–8月）山区道路湿滑，出行前请关注天气和路况；尊重当地少数民族风俗，未经允许不要随意拍摄居民或进入宗教场所。

The Chinese Yuan (CNY/RMB) is used. Tipping is not customary in mainland China—it's actually illegal for government employees to accept tips. High-end hotels and restaurants may include a service charge. Tour guides appreciate small gifts more than cash tips.

Yunnan is generally very safe with low crime rates. Exercise normal precautions in crowded areas. Altitude sickness can be a concern in Shangri-La (3,200m+)—acclimatize slowly. Carry travel insurance covering high-altitude activities if trekking.

Pack layers—temperatures vary dramatically between regions and times of day. Bring sunscreen (high altitude = strong UV), comfortable walking shoes, a light rain jacket, and any prescription medications. For winter visits, warm clothing is essential for mountain areas.

Avoid traveling during Chinese New Year (late Jan-Feb), May 1 Labor Day week, and October 1-7 National Day Golden Week. These are peak domestic travel periods with inflated prices and crowds. The Torch Festival in July and Water Splashing Festival in April are wonderful cultural experiences but book accommodation early.

Most of Yunnan sits at moderate altitude, so Kunming, Dali, and Lijiang rarely cause noticeable altitude sickness. However, high-elevation areas such as Shangri-La, Meili Snow Mountain, and Jade Dragon Snow Mountain (above 3,200 m) can trigger mild symptoms like headaches or shortness of breath in some visitors. Take it easy on arrival, drink plenty of water, stay warm, and consider preventive remedies or portable oxygen. Seek medical help or move to a lower altitude if symptoms become severe.

Be wary of “cheap one-day tour” touts at train stations and scenic entrances—book through reputable agencies or platforms. For souvenirs such as jade, silver, and Pu’er tea, choose trustworthy shops and ask for receipts. Always agree on a price beforehand for horse rides, photos, braided hair, and similar experiences in old towns. During the rainy season (June–August), mountain roads can be slippery, so check weather and road conditions. Respect ethnic-minority customs and ask permission before photographing locals or entering religious sites.

For intercity travel, prioritize high-speed rail or flights; the Kunming–Dali–Lijiang corridor already has fast trains. Within ancient towns, walking or renting an e-scooter is flexible and convenient. For remote areas such as Shangri-La, Lugu Lake, or Yubeng, a private car or small-group tour is the most hassle-free option. Use licensed ride-hailing or taxis and avoid unmarked vehicles.
